Dr Martijn Arns (NL)

Dr Martijn Arns

Founder & Research Director, Brainclinics Foundation
Adviser, neuroCare Group

Martijn Arns graduated in the late 90’s as a biological psychologist at Radboud University in Nijmegen, conducted several projects in the field of applied neuroscience in Sydney (Westmead Hospital), Munich (Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry) and Scotland (Organon Research in Newhouse). Martijn received his PhD at Utrecht University on the topic of ‘EEG-based personalized medicine for ADHD and depression’ and is specialized in neurobiological aspects of ADHD and depression.

In 2001 he founded Research Institute Brainclinics, now part of the non-profit Brainclinics Foundation, as an independent research institute. Brainclinics’ mission is focused on Applied Neuroscience from the clinic to the clinic. The results of this research are a valuable aid in the treatment and prevention of symptoms such as mood-, concentration-, impulse control-, and sleep problems, often seen in disorders such as depression, ADHD, and insomnia. Further specialties are brain imaging (QEEG, ERPs), chronobiology and sleep and Research Domain Criteria (RDoC). He is further specialised in the development and application of neuromodulation techniques such as neurofeedback in the treatment of ADHD and magnetic brain stimulation (rTMS) in the treatment of depression and OCD. At Brainclinics he supervises a team of senior researchers and PhD’s, collaborates with many international colleagues and published more than 150 scientific publications and 4 patents. Martijn is also affiliated with Utrecht University, department of experimental psychology.

In 2006 Martijn founded Brainclinics Treatment as a Brainclinics spin-off where new innovative treatments (rTMS, Neurofeedback) and assessments (sleep, QEEG) were pioneered and validated. This clinic was acquired by the neuroCare Group in 2015 and protocols and assessments developed here, now form the basis of neuroCare Clinics worldwide, where he still serves as a scientific adviser. In addition, Martijn was also founding director of Brainquiry (until 2007), editor of various scientific journals and books, organized many international conferences and served on the board of several international professional organisations.

As a co-author she wrote, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. A.J.F.M. Kerkhof, a self-help book on brooding: “brooding, a step-by-step method to reduce brooding”.

Currently, Marleen trains other professionals in clinics around the world in innovative neuromodulation techniques, such as repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), (Q) EEG informed neurofeedback, Slow Cortical Potential (SCP) neurofeedback, sleep assessment and QEEG sampling and interpretation.

She specializes in the treatment of AD (H) D, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, sleep problems, PTSD, behavioural problems and anxiety disorders in adults and children using neurofeedback therapy, parent guidance, rTMS, sleep assessment, EMDR and psychotherapy.

Her passion lies in working with people, both adults and children. Marleen likes to put people at ease, by making contact in an empathic way and acknowledging their needs, in order to create the optimal treatment or training environment.

Dr Mark Ryan

MBBS, FRANZCP, BCN

Psychiatrist & Clinical Director, neuroCare Clinics Australia

Mark has worked primarily in consultation-liaison psychiatry, providing care in medical and surgical wards. With an abiding interest in psycho-physiology, biofeedback and neuroscience, Mark is accumulating and developing expertise in applying personalised neuromodulation treatments, incorporating these with other established treatment approaches. For many years Mark has integrated the techniques of neurofeedback and other neuromodulation techniques into patient care.

In 2016 Mark joined the neuroCare Group and engaged with neuroCare’s personalised system of treatments in mental health care. Mark works with neuroCare’s research team to deliver evidence-based methods of integrating brain-based technologies with interpersonal therapies and is trained to administer repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and Neurofeedback.

Mark has a particular interest in the link between sleep and both physical and psychological well-being. By combining his comprehensive understanding of insomnia and its role in mental health with leading-edge technologies, Mark offers his patients an innovative and personalised path to achieving positive outcomes. Dr Ryan published an article in 2019 addressing the role of Sleep in ADHD, showing how Neurofeedback is an effective therapy option in this area.

Mark is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and is a BCIA-A accredited neurofeedback practitioner.
